Steel Building Construction

There are many methods of constructing a steel building. A major advantage of the steelbuilding.co.uk building construction process, is the weight of each component.

Because of effective design and cold rolled sections available, plus the kit form we supply material to site in. You will not need to manoeuvre heavy pre-assembled and fabricated frames. This will result in less plant being required on site. Also site access restrictions will become less of a challenge.

We supply a marked up General arrangement drawing, and each component is marked. See link ”general arrangement drawings”. We also issue an assembly manual with clear illustrations of how the components go together.

The common method of steel building construction for a cold rolled framed site building will be beginning with setting out the base cleats. At steel buildings we supply a detailed CAD drawing showing the exact position of each column, gable and door post, including the position relative to the cladding. This makes setting out a relatively easy task and can see set out the whole construction process.

We use holding down bolts with most of our buildings for construction. These can be installed after the slab/pad has been cast, using the template of the base cleat to mark the required holes. The base cleat is supplied with an oversized hole and plate washer, allowing more tolerance in installation.

Once the base cleats are in position and fixed, the columns can be erected. Depending on the height of your steel building construction, it is sometime helpful to install the haunch/eaves bracket to the column before erecting the column.

We recommend starting with the bay that contains the rigid bolted bracing, this will help square the frame and stabilise the structure during erection.

Once you have a bay of columns erected, install the rails and eaves beam for that bay and any bracing angles. Because these components are pre detailed bolted connections, it will continue to square the building, only slight adjustment may be needed (assuming the base is flat and of good tolerance).

After completing the columns, begin assembling the rafters. It’s sometimes easier to bolt the roof bracing cleats to the rafters before erecting. Again start with the bay that contains the rigid bracing. The gable ends will generally have gable posts (unless the steel building construction width is lower than 4.5 metres). These Gable posts like all components have been engineered specifically to your building size. It they fit onto the gable post base cleat and rafter bracket, the rafter is positioned correctly. Note often best to not fully tighten the bolts on apex and haunch brackets, until position of rafters is correct and columns are square (During erection, tighten bolts on columns and rafter brackets to allow forced movement. DO NOT LEAVE LOOSE SO THE STRUCTURE IS UN SAFE). Once the position is correct, tighten all bolts. We also supply a temporary prop post to set the positions of the internal rafter, that don’t have the benefit of the gable post to set positions.

Like the sides, as you build a bay of rafters, install the pre-engineered and detailed bolted Zed purlin at apex and eaves positions to hold the position of the steel building construction correctly.

Once the building is square and level, finish installing the remaining Purlins and rails.

Install pre detailed door frame steel work, checking the door openings created are correct to drawing. If there not it may mean you have the orientation of a cleat incorrectly placed and just needs turning.

Install the roller doors, the running gear fits to the inside flange of the roller doors posts, the door runners are pre drilled, however you will need to mark and drill the door posts based on the required position of the door runners. (One of the advantages of Cold rolled steel Buildings construction is the ease in which you can create new holes).

Once the frame is erected begin cladding the building, fixing and cutting the cladding sheets as required. All cladding and flashings are supplied as part of the kit.
